Rainbow Lorikeets (or lory) are members of the parrot family. As its name suggest, this bird is a living rainbow, with a bright red breast and feathers all the colors of the rainbow. Friendly and affectionate, a lory is also very smart. They love to play and are eager to learn new tricks.

Lorikeets will grow to about 15 inches head to tail. Spending quality time with your lory will make it a wonderful companion. They are good talkers and squawkers. You can keep your lory happy by providing lots of attention and plenty of new toys, which you should change out frequently.

You may often find a member of our volunteer Jr. Critter Crew carrying a baby bird around the store, playing with it, and giving it lots of attention. English Budgies

The English Budgerigar (Budgie) is the larger cousins of American Budgerigars (also known as parakeets). They are 2-3 inches longer than parakeets, and weigh about twice as much. Budgies are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They look fluffier than parakeets and tend to have sweeter personalities if they are well socialized. These birds have been specifically bred as pets and are often show birds.

English Budgies live  about 7 to 9 years. These small parrots appreciate a generous cage and lots of enrichment to keep them happy and healthy. The Animal Store carries a wide variety of toys that will keep your bird busy. The more time you spend with your English Budgie, the happier it will be. They have calm personalities and can learn to talk quite well, making them fantastic family pets.

Our budgies, like all our young birds, are hand raised.

Cockatiel Babies — Fancy Colors

The cockatiel is a friendly little bird and our selection of babies changes all the time. We have fancy colored ‘tiels in store that will catch your eye and then capture your heart. Though their appearance varies, there is only one type of cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus). These charming, beautiful young birds come in a variety of colors and mutations:

Blue and pink and pretty, the Rosy is an unusual little parakeet. “Bourkies” are sometimes also known as blue-vented parrots, sundown parrots, or pink-bellied parrots. This calm and quiet parakeet is a great for beginning pet bird owners. They have such beautiful colors. The yellow one shown here is a lutino. Look at the beautiful tail feathers of the blue one shown below.

Pacific Parrotlet

These baby parrotlets are a jewel-toned beauties. They are the world’s smallest parrots. Though tiny, they come with big personalities. They’re so small that they are sometimes called “pocket parrots,” but watch out for their strong beaks before you consider putting one in your pocket. They enjoy a large cage with tightly spaced bars and plenty of toys and treats for enrichment. They can be quite affectionate but require a lot of attention from their humans in order to thrive as healthy pets.

Peaches are among our favorite lovebirds. Because they are stunningly beautiful with lively and pleasing colors, these little charmers are also sometimes known as the rosy-faced or rosy-collared lovebird. What could be more charming or lovely than a peached-faced lovebird?

Lovebirds are small parrots or Psittaciformes. They are very social and make terrific pets and companions. They are loving and attentive as mates, but tend to bond better with their human families when they are kept as single birds. The Yellow Crested (formerly Lesser Sulphur-crested) Cockatoo is a regal bird. It has white feathers with yellow underwings and a bright yellow crest. Males have black eyes and females have brown eyes. This is the smallest of the crested parrots and their average lifespan is 50-60 years, but they have been known to live 65 years or more.  They can mimic some speech, but aren’t the best talkers. They are extremely intelligent and affectionate. They thrive with a lot of attention, and you should plan to provide them with lots of enrichment.

In the right home, they make fantastic companion pets.

Black Capped Conure (aka Rock Conure) — both the males and females of this striking little parrot have black foreheads, with scalloped black and white neck and breast feathers, and green bodies. They also have a bare eye, or whiteish ring around their eyes. Juveniles are slightly duller in color.

Black Caps are fun and friendly little birds with highly entertaining personalities. They are among the smallest of the conures, growing to about 10 inches from beak to tail. They can live to be about 30 years old.

Triton Cockatoo

Tritons are one of four subspecies of the sulfur-crested cockatoo. Primarily white, they have telltale yellow crests on their heads that the raise and lower depending on their mood. These beautiful birds are extremely intelligent and require a lot of attention. You can keep them happy and healthy by spending a lot of time with them, and providing a variety of enrichment — such as toys and puzzles that you change out often to keep them engaged. These large parrots grow to about 20 inches. Lineolated (or Barred) parakeets are named for its barred or striped black markings. Many are primarily green, but we have a variety of pretty color mutations, from soft blue and turquoise, to a darker feathered beauty. These small birds (Bolborhynchus lineola) are members of the parrot family. They are quite calm and make lovely pets. They are sometimes known as Catherine Parakeets and are excellent mimics, often becoming good talkers.

This Citron-crested Cockatoo, also known as the Sumba Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea citrinocristata), is mostly white and sports a stunningly beautiful orange crest. Slightly smaller than sulpher-crested cockatoos, it will grow to about 15 inches long. Though not known to be great talkers, a Citron can learn to mimic 10-15 words and has a charming personality. The blue-crowned is one of the most beautiful of the conure family. They are very intelligent and can learn a large vocabulary, although they can be a little difficult to understand.
